Nokia to halve its smartphone portfolio in 2010

Nokia announced more than 15 smartphones this year, both touch and non-touch (E72, E75, E55, E52, N86 8MP, 5630 XpressMusic, 5530 XpressMusic, N97 Mini, X6 and so on), and it looks like this number will be halved in 2010.

The reason for this is the continuously increasing competition coming from RIM, Apple, HTC and, more recently, Samsung.

According to Reuters, Antti Vasara, Nokia’s head of smartphones R&D, declared that by releasing fewer smartphones the company will “cut down unnecessary differentiation” and “have a far more focused portfolio for next year.”

Nokia also plans to reduce the prices of its smartphones and probably hopes that the upcoming Symbian^3 platform will help it re-conquer its lost smartphone market share (which fell from 41% to 35% in the last quarter).

2010 is also the year when Nokia will launch its first Maemo 6 device.
