Apple’s tablet (iSlate?) to have 10 inch panels from Innolux

The Apple tablet – which will be unveiled in early 2010, if the latest rumors turn out to be true – may be called iSlate, and the panels for it may be supplied by Innolux, a subsidiary of Foxconn (which already works with Apple, as it manufactures the iPhone).

First, let’s see what this iSlate naming is all about. MacRumors has it that Apple owned the domain iSlate.com for a few weeks in 2006, and it still owns it, although not directly – but through Mark Monitor, a company that manages domain name registrations for the Cupertino-based giant.

Furthermore, TechCrunch has found out that Apple probably owns the trademark for the iSlate name, both in the US and in Europe, via two other companies: Slate Computing and Edwards Angell Palmer & Dodge, respectively.

Since slate is a synonym for tablet, it makes sense for Apple to call its tablet iSlate. We’ll see soon if it will indeed do this.

And now the Innolux panels rumors: according to DigiTimes, Foxconn’s subsidiary will be the initial panel supplier for Apple’s tablet. Reportedly, the panels have 10 inches and are made out of strengthened glass (with G-Tech Optoelectronics being the supplier of the glass strengthening process).
