400,000 Motorola Backflip Android phones ordered by AT&T?

Although it’s the last major US carrier to launch Android phones, AT&T seems to be betting heavily on Google’s open source mobile platform.

According to Eldar Murtazin (who is, most of the time, right), AT&T has ordered 400,000 Motorola Backflip handsets, and it might even order more – which means that the carrier is hoping to sell them like hot cakes.

Motorola Backflip was officially announced two days ago, and it’s a unique handset, thanks to the reverse flip design.

The Backflip features Android 1.5 (so says Motorola), MotoBlur, a 3.1 HVGA touchscreen display, quad-band GSM and tri-band HSDPA connectivity (850 / 1900 / 2100 MHz), Wi-Fi, A-GPS, Android Webkit browser, 3.5mm headset jack, 5MP autofocus camera, and a full QWERTY keyboard.

We don’t know the price and the exact release date of Motorola Backflip, but AT&T should unveil these details pretty soon.
