RIM buys Iris browser developer Torch Mobile

.
Research in Motion announced that it has acquired Torch Mobile, a Canadian software company that developed a WebKit-based mobile browser called Iris (mainly known for being used on Windows Mobile devices).

According to the Torch Mobile official website, as part of Research In Motion, the company’s developers “will continue to be active participants in the WebKit development community”.

So I guess that we should expect new BlackBerry smartphones to come with a WebKit-based browser pre-installed.

WebKit is the open source software that’s being used for browsers installed on the iPhone, the Palm Pre, Android smartphones, and some new Nokia smartphones.
