Orange ‘unlocks’ music store giving customers access to over 700,000 songs

Orange has announced it will give its music service customers access to over 700,000 songs that can be kept and used in anyway they want.

Music available through the Orange music store will be digital rights management (DRM) free, meaning that they can be kept on mobiles, moved to computers, used on MP3 players or burnt to CD.

A deal has been agreed with record labels Universal Music, EMI Music and some smaller independent labels. Each download will go to mobile and computer, but customers will only be charged once, on a tiered pricing plan from 79p per song.

Paul Jevons, director of products, portals and services said: ‘Orange is committed to providing customers with the widest access to music tracks and content.

‘Upgrading the Music Portal and introducing DRM-free music helps customers enjoy music how and when they want. We look forward to enhancing the DRM-free music catalogue over the coming months.’

The announcement comes after Orange’s 11th partnership with Glastonbury and the refresh of tariffs being offered on the Nokia 5800 comes with music handset.
