Google adds smart URL shortener to mobile Gmail

Google has updated its mobile Gmail web service with a URL shortener that automatically truncates URLs to make them easier to read and take up less space in an email.

The feature is also able to extract information from the link to display information in normal languages. For example, if a URL contains an address in Google Maps, the service automatically pulls the relevant address information out of the url into a readable format.

For now, the service only works with Google Maps, Google Sites, and YouTube videos - with plans to roll-out support for more link types, like Google Docs, in the future.
